so, hab mir bis jetzt das neue Album schon min. 4 mal angehört.

Mein Fazit: Einfach ein großartiges Album, welches alt Bekanntes von Dream Theater neu aufleben lässt.
Mir gefällt der neu eingeschlagene 'Kurs', der nicht mehr allzu sehr zum reinen Melodik Metal passen müsste, von Dream Theater sehr gut.
Repentance beweisst auf der anderen Seite wiederum, dass man die gefühlvolle Stilistik der Band weiterbehält.
Dream Theater ist und bleibt für mich immer eine super Band

Also bei mir läuft gerade wieder das großartige und überragende! Images and Words. Aber nur um mich ein wenig abzulenken von meinem Frust über Systematic Chaos. Nicht dass ich die Musik schlecht fände, der Sound ist toll, es herrscht eine große Abwechslung usw. Aber irgendwie beginnen meine langjährigen Helden mich gewaltig zu nerven. Gut dass das natürlich alles nur Geschmackssache ist aber es gibt auf der neuen CD nicht wenige Passagen, da will ich am liebsten vorspulen oder gleich ein anderes Album reinlegen. Das ist mir bei DT noch nie so passiert. Und dieses finde ICH beunruhingend.
Woran liegt das? Diese Frage habe ich auch noch nicht abschließend für mich beantworten können, aber irgendwie wurmt mich das ganze. Ein wesentlicher Aspekt ist sicherlich das unübersehbare Pathos, das die Texte von DT seit einiger Zeit begleitet. Die Art und Weise auf die LaBrie potentiell bedeutungsschwere Worte und Ausdrücke betont und in die Länge zieht (God, faith, truth, redemption, terrible danger, shocking mysteries, war, tyrant rule, freedom, ...) als ob er etwas wichtiges zu sagen hätte. Hat er aber nicht. Der Anspruch den solche Worte hervorrufen wollen löst sich auf der inhaltlichen Ebene nicht ein. Und es passt nicht zu der Musik von DT. Jedenfalls nehme ich ihnen das nicht so ganz ab. Es ist da zwar eigentlich unzulässig von mir, einzelne Worte so aus dem Zusammenhang zu entfernen aber die Texte haben es nicht anders verdient. Bei dem gesamten letzten "In the Presence of Enemies" rollen sich mir die Fußnägel hoch, so lächerlich wirkt der Text (Dark master within ...). Ok, es mag ungerecht sein, denke ich mir, eine Metal Band (keine Stildiskussionen jetzt bitte) an einem hohen textlichen Anspruch zu messen, aber es scheint mir, dass DT dies doch überzeugend verkaufen wollen. Bei anderen Bands kann ich über lächerliche Texte lächeln, bzw. hinwegsehen aber irgendwie meine ich in LaBries Intonation etwas zu hören, das mir den Inhalt als doch so ernst und bedeutungsvoll ausgeben möchte. Wahrscheinlich ist es das, was andere mit "mit Herz dabei" bezeichnen". Da fand ich die "Vokalakrobatik" von damals ohne viel Pathos passender. Leider kann ich hier nicht mehr Text und Musik getrennt betrachten. Naja, das ist auf jedem Fall die eine Seite dessen, was mein Bauchgefühl beim Hören vermeldet und mein Kopf versucht, sich krampfhaft zu erklären. Bei Octavarium hatte ich schon irgendwie ähnliche Gefühle, jetzt halt noch stärker. Auf allen älteren Alben (außer Scenes) tritt der Text für mich angenehm in den Hintergrund, ohne dass ich mich darüber ärgern muss.

Was die Musik betrifft werde ich das Album sicher noch einige Male hören müssen aber ich finde schon jetzt, dass viele von Petruccis Riffs ins Leere hineineiern ohne die Schlagkraft zu besitzen, die andere Bands haben, denen er es hier nachtun möchte oder in Verbindung mit dem Keyboard die Originalität versprühen, die z.B. I&W noch aufweisen konnte.
Ich finde DT nach wie vor genial darin, die Elemente einiger Rockklassiker-Bands zu verarbeiten (Song Octavarium) oder auch Teile von Songs zu kopieren wie auf dem genialen ACoS, dies mit ihrer eigenen instrumentalen Kunst zu verbinden und dabei noch eine gewisse Leichtigkeit über das ganze zu stellen, die einen großen Teil meiner Bewunderung für die Musiker ausmacht. Bei der härteren Seite von DT passt es nun allerdings nicht mehr für mich. Da würde ich ganz klar andere Bands vorziehen. Constant Motion und The Dark Eternal Night finde ich fürchterlich. Komischerweise mag ich ToT sehr. Andere nennen dieses Album seelenlos, ich aber finde genau die noch nicht so starke Ausprägung des so schauerhafeten emotionalen Appells vorteilhaft für die Musik von DT.

So, das musste jetzt raus. Natürlich gibt es bei der ganzen Vielfalt auf SC auch einige tolle Momente aber dass mich DT schon nerven können ist soweit neu (bei Octavarium wollte ich es mir vllt nur noch nicht so eingestehen) und muss erst einmal verarbeitet werden. Soweit mal meine vorläufigen Eindrücke.

Das ist ja ein toller Tipp, Danke! Ich war eigentlich auf den letzten Konzerten immer anwesend und habe alles abgegriffen was ich so konnte (inkl. Stick). Das ändert aber gar nichts an der Tatsache, das mich das neueste Album an manchen Stellen nervt. So ist das halt und jeder empfindet Musik anders und denkt sich halt so seinen Teil. Und des war halt meiner. Basta. Freu mich für Dich wenn Dir DT immer noch sehr gefallen. Ich warte mal was Konzerte angeht auf Sieges Even im Herbst / Winter. Die gewohnte DT-Show habe ich glaub ich auf Konzerten und diversen DVDs oft genug bestaunen können.

Ich bin beeindruckt von Systematic Chaos. Zwar habe ich WDADU noch immer nicht gefunden

aber die Platte sprüht vor Energie und Spielfreude.

Nicht auszudenken, wie genial die Band sein könnte, wenn alle Mitglieder als gleichberechtigte Partner agieren dürften. (Oder doch?) Nachdem ich nun das "Making Of" sowie das Inti inne Rock Hard intus hab, weiß ich aber, dass dem entgegen aller Aussagen der beiden Band-Diktatoren nicht so ist - und kann nur wie folgt fazitieren:

Mike Portnoy ist ja wohl mal ein geltungssüchtiges, infantiles ********* vor dem Herrn!

LOS ANGELES - After recently celebrating the band's 20-year
anniversary, Dream Theater returns with its first-ever best-of
collection. Spanning 1991-2005, the two-disc set contains rare
single edits, B-sides and a trio of new remixes that spotlight
that band's nonpareil musicianship, complex arrangements and
amazing songwriting. Dream Theater's GREATEST HIT (...& 21 other
pretty cool songs) will be available from Rhino on April 1 at
all physical retail outlets and www.rhino.com for a suggested
retail price of $19.98 and at all digital retail outlets for a
suggested retail price of $12.99.

Referring to Dream Theater's first and only major radio hit,
"Pull Me Under," the compilation's tongue-in-cheek title is a
testament not only to the band's sense of humor but also
highlights the acclaimed New York-based quintet's ability to
make music and cultivate a legion of fans on its own terms,
without help from radio or MTV. The collection features more
than two hours of progressive hard rock from James LaBrie (vocals),
John Myung (bass), John Petrucci (guitar/vocals), Mike Portnoy
(drums/vocals) and Jordan Rudess (keyboards).

The collection contains three newly remixed versions of tracks
from Dream Theater's breakout 1992 album, Images And Words: the
aforementioned "Pull Me Under" as well as "Take The Time" and
"Another Day." Portnoy says this album presented the perfect
opportunity to give the songs a bit of a facelift. "The original
mixes always sounded a bit '80s' to me, so we had our good
friend and longtime mixer Kevin Shirley give the tracks a bit
of an update to sound more like the rest of the Dream Theater
catalog. The songs remain the same (no pun intended-Kevin just
mixed that album as well), but there are little nuances in the
tracks that I forgot were originally there, and it's very cool
to hear them again."

The collection's 22 songs are split evenly between two discs,
which are divided into "The Dark Side" (the metallic) and
"The Light Side" (the melodic). Filled with some of the band's
most sinister sounds, the first disc lives up to the billing
of "The Dark Side." Longtime fans will appreciate the abundance
of alternative versions of classic tracks, including single
edits of "Lie," "Home," and "Misunderstood." Disc One concludes
with two tracks from the band's 2005 album Octavarium:
"The Root Of All Evil" and "Sacrificed Sons."

The second disc, "The Light Side," spotlights the band's melodic
side and features an alternate mix of "Through Her Eyes,"
a single edit of "Solitary Shell" and "To Live Forever,"
a 1994 B-side from the U.K.-only single of "Lie."

A grassroots phenomenon for 20 years, Dream Theater continues to
record studio albums acclaimed for award-winning musicianship as
well as artistic vision. To meet the demands of a demanding
global fan base, the band also maintains an active touring
schedule that regularly includes sold-out performances around
the world.

Dream Theater has currently been on the road since June 2007,
traveling the globe in support of their latest studio album
Systematic Chaos. Their world tour will conclude with a final
run throughout North America in May as they premiere their
"Progressive Nation" package tour with Opeth, Between The Buried
And Me, and 3 supporting.

Dream Theater's "Forsaken" video

"Dream Theater and Roadrunner Records are ecstatic to announce
that the band's new video, "Forsaken", will premiere in early
2008. We think this anime-themed video will be the best from
Dream Theater. Period."

"Inspired by a short story written in the 1800's by a Russian
novelist about a man being visited by a vampiress during the
night, Dream Theater's second single, "Forsaken" is intriguing.
It portrays the horror of this story between a haunting piano
melody, heavy guitar riff, and powerful vocals. Check out the
video which features beautiful Japanese style anime.
